Product Description In World War II, a group of Nazi officers come up with a propaganda event in which an all star Nazi team will play a team composed of Allied Prisoners of War in a Soccer (Football) game. The Prisoners agree, planning on using the game as a means of escape from the camp.
Amazon.com Fans of The Great Escape and The Longest Yard will cheer venerable director John Huston's rousing 1981 adventure that pits Allied prisoners of war against their German captors in a soccer match. Michael Caine, who starred in Huston's The Man Who Would Be King, heads an international all-star cast as true-Brit John Colby, a former soccer champion, who heads the rag-tag squad. Max Von Sydow costars as the humane German officer who proposes the match, improbably staged for maximum propaganda impact in a stadium in Paris. As the Allied team, which includes real-life soccer legends Pele and Bobby Moore, practices, the officers' only goal is an audacious half-time escape. Sylvester Stallone is somewhat out of his league as the American determined to join the team. As an actor, Pele may not be on the same playing field as his Oscar-winning costars, but he is thrilling to watch as he executes some awesome, game-winning kicks. --Donald Liebenson

Simply Spectacular March 17, 2003 el statico 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I didn't know about this movie, but I bought it based on the Amazon customers' positive reviews. This movie will NOT disappoint. As you get closer and closer to the climax - a soccer match between a ragged bunch of POWs and an elite German national team - you already sense it's going to be something spectacular. And then the match...the POWs down by 4 goals in front a now quiet and dejected crowd...it is at this point the movie truly lives up to its tagline..."now is the time for heroes" Get ready for an emotional and stunning fight back.
Hatch! This game means a lot to us...you know that! March 30, 2004 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Even though the story is totally unrealistic, it really is one of my guilty pleasures in my DVD collection. I have to agree with many of the good points that have already been said (good soccer footage, great music score, etc). The one item that people get wrong is that Stallone's character is NOT and American, but rather a Canadian soldier, who during WWII would've fought alongside British troops. It was a good idea also to let the actors carry the story (albeit, a little clunky at times) and limit the lines of the "real" players used in the film. This film should be in every serious soccer players dvd collection!
Terrific movie November 12, 2002 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
"Victory" has the patriotism and under-doggishness of "Rocky" and the locations and style of music (including almost as catchy theme music) of "The Great Escape." "Victory" seems to take much of its style from these two movies, and I would say that fans of either of these movies (especially "Rocky") will find this movie very enjoyable. Sure, it borders between plausible and fantastical, but it's a credit to the directing genius of the legendary John Huston that the tension is sustained and we buy into all of it, getting caught up in the story.Don't let the price of this DVD fool you; the video quality is phenomenal. Colors are very vibrant and blacks are pitch black. Buying this DVD (...), I was expecting mediocre-to-decent video quality and was blown away. (...) Perhaps the fact that it was directed by Huston prompted this... or maybe there's just a soccer fan at the WB digital labs. Anyways, I would definitely recommend the purchase of this DVD on the video quality alone. Nothing thrills me more with DVD than to watch a movie in 2.35:1 with a top-notch transfer.
A Cult Classic November 15, 2001 alex dumas (Singapore) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first watch this back in 82' when i was 8 years old. Have seen it every now and then on the telly, but i must say, it's a real classic. I don't understand Stallone's critics, i thought he had real chemistry with Michael Caine and must be one of the most underrated actors ever. And everytime i hear the fantastic soundtrack, and see the players coming out for the 2nd half, it never fails to bring back odd tear to the eye. Absolutely moving. A must see for all males and football fans.
A good Stallone movie. June 11, 2002 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Sure a good Stallone movie sounds like an oxymoron, but the storyline keeps you in your seat. The glory of competition is not captured as well in any other sports movie. This is a must see for any soccer (football) fan. Victory: Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone, Pele', and scores of international players before the sport went mainstream.
