Product Description
A BAD-LUCK NAVY OFFICER IS GIVEN ONE LAST CHANCE TO MAKE GOOD WHEN HE'S GIVEN COMMAND OF AN OUT-OF-DATE DIESEL SUBMARINE &THE BIGGEST CREW OF NAUTICAL MISFITS EVER TO SAIL THE SEVEN SEAS.

Amazon.com
Kelsey Grammer stars as the captain of a rust-bucket submarine who is fighting for his career by proving his skills in a contest against far more sophisticated ships. Rob Schneider provides comic support as an uptight ensign, and Lauren Holly plays an officer who has to fight her own will-they-accept-me-because-I'm-a-woman anxieties. The film didn't do well at the box office, but it is actually pretty funny, Grammer is enjoyable, and the above-the-water/below-the-water action sequences are as good as any in most submarine films. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Great film, under-rated and worthy of a DVD (when?!)   April 28, 2003

This is without a doubt one of the funniest sea movies ever. Yet it got mediocre reviews when it came out. Kelsey Grammer plays a renegade sub captain who gets his first command not on a nuclear sub, but on a mothballed diesel rustbucket, destined for scrap after some wargames guaranteed to deep-six his naval career.

But Captain Dodge (Grammer) has a lot of tricks up his sleeve. He even gets the best from his mutinous crew and by the pirate scene (priceless) I was pretty much slumped on the couch, laughing my keester off. We like this one so much we watched it twice in a row.

Yeah, it's another submarine film (I can't resist them!) and this one is...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED--even if it's not yet on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars ...lowbrow humor, just what we need today...   June 16, 2003

Don't look for the cerebral in this comic farce about a submarine full of Navy misfits led by a true comedic chameleon, Mr. Kelsey Grammar.
Down Periscope is a lighthearted romp full of slapstick comedy, bodily function humor, and revenge, with some really good Naval strategy mixed in. "The Hunt for Red October" this is not...
...but what a great cast! Lauren Holly as the Navy's ONLY female dive officer (there's a lesbian joke somewhere in there, but I'll leave it alone), Grammar as the sub commander, Rob Schneider as his anal and perpetually "stick-up-his-butt" executive officer, not to mention Rip Torn in a much overlooked role as Grammar's Commanding Officer and his only (silent) fan and supporter. Bruce Dern also puts in a strong performance as one of Grammar's foes, the senior officer out to get him.
It's a great, funny, and good-feeling movie that I can't wait to own on DVD. I will watch it again and again...

5 out of 5 stars IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!   December 9, 2003

Have you ever gone to the theater and just picked a movie at random that you think sounds good? Well, that's what I did with this movie, and let me tell you....IT ROCKS!!! You walk into the theater with no expectations because, after all, you have no idea what to expect. You've never even heard of the film, so you take your chances and roll the dice. This was a fantastic film. No! It did not have huge success at the box office. No! It does not have superstar caliber actors. What it does have is great writing, great characters, and the kind of "off-the-wall" humor that makes you say, "I can't believe they just said that!". I especially like Harland Williams as "Sonar".

If you have never seen this movie please see it, even if you rent it first, because as far as I'm concerned it is a true classic! I will be buying it the day it is released. I have been waiting for this to come to DVD for about three or four years now. All I can say is.....IT'S ABOUT TIME!!! See this movie! You'll have a "whale" of a time!

FIVE STARS for it's humor and wacky characters (the kind that you feel you actually know, and will miss when the movie is over!) ENJOY it with a group of friends!

5 out of 5 stars When is Down Periscope going to be released on DVD?   October 20, 2001

The first time I saw Down Periscope wasn't at the theater, it was a video rental. As I watched the movie, I found myself wrapped up in the plot, the intellectual (as well as the not so intellectual) humor, and the way the cast seemed to meld together. Why did this movie not do well at the theaters? Was it not given the same level of advertising which Sargent Bilko received? I feel that Down Periscope was a better movie. But because Kelsey Grammer is not as big a name comedian as Steve Martin, Down Periscope was simply overlooked.

I would love to have this movie on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A great movie to watch over and over....   October 7, 2002

It is unfortunate that so many movies that become box office hits are so forgettable, and yet there exist good films like DOWN PERISCOPE that are passed over in review. I never tire of watching this movie; being an ex-Navy man, some of the characters spot-on match people I knew during my time, so I can appreciate the nautical humor. However, I place this movie in a league with the really good comedy movies of the last 20 or so years that combine brainless humor with a thoughtful, intellectual, and moral message. Definetly a must-buy when it comes out on DVD.
